Who Is Inanna?Inanna is the Sumerian goddess of love, war, justice, and political power — the Queen of Heaven and Earth, one of the oldest and most complex deities in human history. She is the great goddess of ancient Mesopotamia, worshipped in Sumer for over 4,000 years, and her myths are among the oldest written stories ever recorded. She is fierce, passionate, and utterly sovereign — a goddess who descends into the underworld and returns, who collects the divine powers of civilization, who loves and wars and judges with equal intensity. She is known as Ishtar in the Akkadian tradition — the same goddess, different name, equally vast in power and complexity. She is the morning and evening star — the planet Venus — and she governs the full spectrum of human experience: love and war, life and death, the sacred and the profane. Her Origins & MythologyInanna's most famous myth is her descent into the underworld — the Great Below — to visit her sister Ereshkigal, queen of the dead. At each of the seven gates of the underworld, she is stripped of one of her divine garments and powers until she arrives before Ereshkigal naked and bowed low. She is killed and hung on a hook like a piece of meat. After three days, her servant Ninshubur — whom she had instructed to seek help if she did not return — goes to the gods. Enki sends two small beings to rescue her, and Inanna is restored to life. But the laws of the underworld demand a substitute — someone must take her place. She chooses her husband Dumuzi, who had not mourned her absence. He descends in her place, and the cycle of the seasons is born. This myth is one of the oldest descent narratives in human history — a template for every story of death and resurrection, of the hero who goes into the dark and returns transformed. Inanna descends with everything. She returns with more. Her Symbols & Sacred Correspondences Symbols: The eight-pointed star, the lion, the bundle of reeds, the ring and rod of divine power, the gate, the planet Venus Animals: Lions, owls, the serpent Crystals: Lapis lazuli, carnelian, rose quartz, garnet, ruby, labradorite, moonstone, amber Colors: Deep lapis blue, gold, deep red, violet Element: Air (the morning star, the heights of heaven) and Earth (the descent, the underworld) Planet: Venus — the morning and evening star, her most sacred symbol Moon Phase: Full moon and new moon — she governs the full cycle Sacred Herbs of Inanna Rose — sacred to Venus/Inanna across cultures. What Inanna Rules Over Love in all its forms — erotic, romantic, and the love of life itself War and the fierce power of the warrior Justice and political power The descent into darkness and the return transformed The me — the divine powers of civilization (she collected them all) The morning and evening star — Venus in all its aspects Sovereignty and the right to rule Transformation through loss and return The full spectrum of human experience — she refuses to be reduced to any single domain How to Work With InannaInanna is a goddess of the full spectrum — she will not let you be partial. She asks for wholeness: the willingness to love fully, to fight for what matters, to descend when descent is required, and to return changed. She is not a comfortable goddess, but she is a profoundly empowering one.Set Up an AltarUse deep blue and gold fabrics, an eight-pointed star, lapis lazuli and carnelian, roses, and a candle. Offerings include wine, honey, roses, and anything beautiful. Venus rising in the morning or evening sky is her most sacred sign — acknowledge her there.Descent RitualInanna's descent is the template for all shadow work and transformation. When you are going through a period of loss, stripping away, or forced change — call on her. She has been to the Great Below and returned. Ask her to guide you through your own descent and to help you return with what you need.Sovereignty WorkInanna collected all the me — the divine powers of civilization — and brought them to her city. She is the goddess of claiming your power. Ask her: What power is mine that I have not yet claimed? What sovereignty am I not yet living?Venus PracticeWatch for Venus in the sky — the morning star before sunrise, the evening star after sunset. When you see her, acknowledge Inanna. Speak to her. This is one of the oldest forms of her worship — the recognition of the goddess in the planet that bears her energy.Crystals Sacred to Inanna Lapis Lazuli — her most sacred stone — the deep blue of the night sky, used extensively in Mesopotamian goddess worship. She wore it as jewelry and it adorned her temples. Carnelian — deep orange-red, used alongside lapis lazuli in ancient Mesopotamian jewelry and amulets sacred to Inanna. Signs Inanna Is Reaching Out Venus appearing bright and significant in the sky A period of stripping away — loss, change, things falling apart A pull toward ancient Mesopotamian mythology or Sumerian culture Dreams of gates, descents, or a powerful crowned woman Feeling called to claim power you have been giving away Lions appearing in dreams or waking life A deep resonance with themes of descent, death, and return A Note on DevotionInanna is one of the oldest goddesses whose words we can still read — her hymns, written by the priestess Enheduanna over 4,000 years ago, are the oldest signed literary works in human history. To work with Inanna is to connect with the oldest layer of human spiritual experience — the first stories we told about love, war, death, and the return of life. She descended with everything. She returned with more. That is her promise to those who follow her into the dark.At the first gate they took her crown. At the seventh gate they took everything. She arrived naked and bowed low. And still she was Inanna.
